What Are Orb Balloons?

Orb balloons, sometimes called globe balloons, are a different kind of foil balloon. Rather than the flat, two-sided shape of a standard foil balloon, orbs are built from curved panels that inflate into a genuine sphere, giving them a fuller, rounder look with real depth from every angle.

That shape isn't just visual — it holds more gas, too! The true spherical shape gives it a larger volume, which is part of why orb balloons have such a full, substantial presence in a room. Orb balloons are also long-lasting, typically staying looking their best for around two weeks.

Orb Balloons on the Ceiling

Their rounded shape makes orb balloons especially effective overhead. Grouped together and left unweighted, they drift up to the ceiling and gather there, filling a room with helium-filled colour from above rather than at eye level. It's a look particularly suited to a more elegant setting — a formal reception, a marquee, or a larger room where a ceiling full of orb balloons becomes part of the décor itself.

For ceiling displays, you can choose curling foil ribbon, which catches the light and adds a little movement as the balloons settle, or a satin ribbon for a softer, more classic finish. Both come attached before delivery, so there's nothing to assemble.

How Many Orb Balloons Do You Need?

As a rough guide, we suggest around 5 orb balloons per square metre of ceiling for a full, dense cluster where the ceiling is mostly covered in colour. For a lighter, more scattered look — which can be just as pretty, especially over a bigger space — fewer balloons spaced further apart will still make an impact without needing full coverage.

To work out roughly how many you'll need, multiply the length and width of your room in metres to get the square metreage, then multiply that by 5 for dense coverage. For example, a room measuring 5m x 4m is 20 square metres, so you'd need around 100 orb balloons for full coverage, or significantly fewer — say 30 to 40 — for a scattered effect spread evenly across the ceiling.

Worried About Balloons Escaping Onto a High Ceiling?

Some venues are understandably cautious about helium balloons on a high ceiling, in case one or two escape their ribbon and end up stuck out of reach for weeks. It's a fair concern, and one we're happy to help with — if a balloon does get away from you, we know exactly how to get it back. We can talk you through a simple retrieval method over the phone, or come out and fish it down ourselves.
